The record of personal observations gathered by the Chinese priest Fa-hien during the travels he made at the beginning of the fifth century in Central Asia, the Punjab, India, Ceylon and thence back by sea to China, were repeatedly published, apparently under different titles, in the course of the fifth and following centuries and when the Buddhist canon was authoritatively fixed by the Sung dynasty, this record was included in the Tripitaka with the sanction of the Sung and subsequently the King dynasties. Both the Corean and Japanese editions of the Buddhist Tripitaka also include Fa-hien's Record among the canonical writings of Northern Buddhism. The text suffered, in the course of time, slight corruptions, but the differences existing between the secular editions, as contained in various Confucian cyclopedias, and the canonical editions of the Buddhist churches of China, Corea and Japan, are very small. Dr. Legge was, so far as we know, the first translator of this work who took pains to collate the principal existing recensions of the Chinese text, and he has now produced, on the basis of the Corean edition, a text which may be considered as critically established.

In September 1867, Muir undertook a walk of about 1,000 miles from Indiana to Florida, which he recounted in his book A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf. He had no specific route chosen, except to go by the "wildest, leafiest, and least trodden way I could find". Earlier that year, an accident changed the course of his life when a tool he was using slipped and struck him in the eye. He was confined to a darkened room for six weeks, worried whether he would ever regain his sight. When he did, he saw the world and his purpose in a new light. Muir later wrote, "This affliction has driven me to the sweet fields. God has to nearly kill us sometimes, to teach us lessons." From that point on, he determined to be true to himself and follow his dream of exploration and study of plants. John Muir (1838-1914) was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, have been read by millions. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he founded, is a prominent American conservation organization.

Im ersten Band "Zu Fuß durch Afrika" berichteten die Autoren Sonia und Alexandre Poussin von ihrer Wanderung vom Kap der Guten Hoffnung durch Südafrika, Simbabwe, Malawi und Tansania zum Kilimandscharo. Während der 1171 Tage dauernden Wanderung lassen uns die beiden an ihren interessanten und bewegenden Bekanntschaften, ihren Ängsten vor Durst, Hitze oder den Löwen teilhaben, mit ihnen betrachtet und erlebt der Leser die surrealen Ufer des Turkana-Sees in Kenia, die mystischen Ruinen von Meroë im Nord-Sudan, die glühende Hitze in der nubischen Steinwüste von Batn el-Hagar, entdeckt die sehr geheimen Rituale der Ehefrauen im Sudan oder die fremde Schönheit der Hamer und der Dassanetch in Äthiopien, begleitet einen Kameltreiber aus Darfur mit seiner Karawane durch die Wüste. Tag für Tag und Schritt für Schritt mehren sich die Erfahrungen und Einsichten der Wanderer "auf den Spuren der Menschen und der Menschheit". Und das Ende der Reise ist der Anfang eines neuen Abenteuers, denn kurz nach der Rückkehr von Sonia und Alexandre Poussin wird ein kleines Mädchen geboren.
