Na początku historii mówi, że faktycznie musiałby on osiągnąć stan szaleństwa, jeśliby miał oczekiwać od czytelnika, że ten uwierzy w historię, dając do zrozumienia, że został już oskarżony o szaleństwo. Czarny kot zawiera twarde potępienie alkoholizmu. Czyny narratora są spowodowane działaniem alkoholu, wrogiem, który niszczy jego osobowość. W noweli da się także dostrzec skłonność do opisu zła samego w sobie. Narrator wie, że zwierzęta są niewinne, właśnie dlatego je kocha, jednak daje on się porwać i gnębić duchowi przekory, aż zabija on w afekcie swoją żonę.

Rogers war eine sehr hübsche, beliebte junge Frau und durch ihre Stelle in einem Zigarrenladen in der Stadt bekannt. Wenige Tage nach ihrem Verschwinden im Juli 1841 wurde ihre Leiche im Hudson River gefunden. Zur Inhalt: Marie Rogêt, Angestellte in einem Parfumgeschäft in Paris, verschwindet spurlos. Nach vier Tagen wird ihre Leiche in der Seine gefunden. Ihre Angehörigen, wie auch die Polizei tappen im Dunkeln. Daher bittet der Präfekt Dupin nach seinen Ermittlungserfolgen im Fall des Doppelmord in der Rue Morgue um Hilfe. Zusammen mit seinem Partner, dem namenlosen Erzähler, analysiert Dupin Zeitungsartikel, Polizeiberichte und Zeugenaussagen rund um den Mord. Allein durch das Aufdecken von Fehlannahmen und Missdeutungen in den Berichten kommt Dupin zu dem Schluss, dass es sich um einen einzelnen Täter handeln muss und nicht wie bisher angenommen um eine Gruppe. Der Mörder muss das Mädchen an einer Stoffschlinge zum Ufer geschleppt und mit Hilfe eines Bootes in den Fluss geworfen haben.
